TRAFFIC MATTERS: Car seat laws set to change
I want to talk about car seats for our children. As a parent, I have dealt with several car seats for my kids over the years. I recently completed a Child Seat Safety Course developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and discovered that I did some things wrong over the years. I thought I would share some information with you folks so that you can safely restrain your children in your cars.
Let's start with infants and progress up the age ranges. Infants should be restrained in a rear facing infant car seat that has an appropriate weight range. By facing to the rear, the seat will provide support to their heads and spine, which are still developing. These seats should be installed in the rear seat and in the middle if possible. This will provide the best position in the car to protect the baby from a collision. NEVER install a rear facing infant seat in the front seat of a car with a passenger air bag.
