Trial starts: Toddler dies in crash
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Police say the driver was high on meth when he crashed his Jeep into a family's car last year, fatally wounding a toddler and seriously injuring his twin brother.
On Tuesday, Ramon Rascon's trial got underway in Albuquerque with both sides laying out their arguments and jurors seeing graphic evidence.
18 month-old Brandon Lucero and his twin brother Ryan were in the back seat of a car driven by their grandfather when Ramon Rascon slammed into the back of their car which was stopped at a stop sign. "Both Brandon and Ryan were born premature babies at 26 weeks, both fought for their lives the first 3 months of their lives and for Brandon to end up getting taken out like this it's horrible," said their grandfather Richard Woodward.
The crash happened in May of 2010 at the Northeast heights intersection. Police on scene say Ramon Rascon admitted the accident was his fault and said he had taken meth and sleeping pills before it happened, but on Tuesday, his attorney said that's not what caused the crash.
