9 Low-Stress and Low-Cost Ways to Fly With Your Toddler

As the holidays approach, families begin to fret about taking their toddler on their next flight. Parents are in for a new set of challenges and experiences when they bring their little one(s) along for the ride. For the last two years, my wife and I have had the pleasure of taking our daughter, now 4 years old, with us on flights across the country and around the world. Here is some of what we have learned… Pre-flight preparation Buy a seat restraint. Since children older than 2 years old must have their own seat, parents are left to provide a safe and comfortable arrangement. While you could bring an approved car seat, I have had great success with the product, which is simple, compact, and FAA-certified. In addition to safety, the idea is that in a harness, children feel like they are in a familiar place (like their car seat), and they’ll more easily adapt to the airplane environment. Order the child’s meal.

Layaway plans lure shoppers

Buyer beware

The Iowa Better Business Bureau offers these tips to consumers using layaway programs:
Ask how much time you have to pay off the item. Most stores have set minimum installments during a set period of time.
Find out when the payments are due, how much you have to put down and if there are any storage or service fees. Many have an upfront fee ranging from $5 to $15.
Ask about refunds and returns or if you change your mind once you’ve started making payments. Most will refund your money, sometimes keeping a small service fee.
What if the item goes on sale after you put it on layaway? Some will make price adjustments in a set period of time like seven to 14 days of purchase.

Overhead Bin - Tips for taking a trip with toddlers

I recently traveled with a baby and toddler. Our toddler has a severe dairy allergy so we had to bring soy formula and soy milk for our trip (12 hours door to door). TSA was very accommodating but plan to be in security a while. Also they agents are very familiar with both my body and my husbands - in order to travel with liquid (even a reasonable amount for children) you have to be searched and everything swiped and tested. However, the agents were polite and all the employees of US Air were very helpful as well. And somehow my babies were perfect little travelers - I'm sure some prayers of the other travelers were answered :)

Ahh yes, the story about how to comfortably fly with ones pets is full of support and encouragement for the pet owners but those who dare to take their children to a foreign country to meet family or expect other adults to be understanding of children traveling to say goodbye to a deceased family member are the @!$%#s. If you cannot handle being among the public and dealing with there being people of all ages, races, physical and mental capacities perhaps you should be the one considerate enough to stay off the flight.

Tips for flying with toddlers | Stuck at the Airport

Each Friday on msnbc.com’s Overhead Bin I track down an answer to a reader’s travel question.

This week it was:

How do you fly with two toddlers?”

That’s what Jessica White wanted to know.

“When I called Frontier Airlines,” said White, “they couldn’t answer my questions about bringing aboard car seats and checking our large double stroller at the gate.”

I didn’t find anything to address gate-checking strollers under the Traveling with children section of the Frontier Airlines website, so I called the airline directly.

A cheery agent offered to make a note in a reservation record and assured me that White would be able to gate-check her stroller for free. “She could also check the stroller at the counter but I suggest the mom take it to the gate so she doesn’t have to worry about chasing toddlers through the airport,” she said.
