Woodyard emerges as reliable running back for Southern Miss
Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora commented before the season that having too many running backs wouldn't be a problem for the Golden Eagles.
Of course, Fedora didn't envision his top two backs, junior Desmond Johnson and sophomore Kendrick Hardy, spending a combined 10 games on the sidelines with injuries.
Despite the absence of Johnson and Hardy (who combined for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2010), USM's running game has continued to flourish thanks to the emergence of Jamal Woodyard.
The redshirt freshman from Fairhope, Ala., needs nine yards in Saturday's crucial Conference USA contest at East Carolina to become the team's leading rusher. He has picked up 418 yards in just 61 attempts, is averaging 6.9 yards per carry, and has turned in consecutive 100-yard rushing games for the No. 24-ranked Golden Eagles.
"Jamal has really been huge for us," said Fedora. "He runs with power and carries his pads well. He can get you four or five yards when there's really nothing there and he's got enough speed to take it the distance. I don't know how fast he is, but he's running fast enough and nobody's catching him.
