Weekend Yard Sale to Benefit 3-Day Cancer Walk
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Race for the Cure is coming up fast and a fellow Powegian needs your help so she can join the crusade for cleavage.
Tonya Richardson, an alumni walker of the race, has participated in the breast cancer research race for the past three years with a core group of ladies—Amy Johnson, Teresa Redmond and Jen Schultz. All four of the women are Poway High School alum and are adding three “newbies” to their walking group this year: Cathy Miller, Christine Shearer and Heather Young.
“We all have our reasons for walking,” Richardson said in an email to Patch. “My personal reason has always been my mother, Sally Schultz.”
Richardson’s mom is a 15-year breast cancer survivor who taught Richardson what strength and positivity really is. Richardson’s aunt and cousin have been diagnosed with breast cancer since she started doing the race for the cure three years ago.
“My cousin remains cancer-free for the last year and a half, but my aunt was re-diagnosed earlier this year,” Richardson said. “Initially, I was not going to walk this year, but when she was in the hospital in August, I made a late decision to walk.
