Harvard fights back from autumn storm
HARVARD -- Forget frost on the pumpkins -- how about a foot of snow?
Harvard awoke Sunday morning to find a winter wonderland, a full eight weeks before the official start of winter. Thanks to the weight of the wet snow, trees snapped and left the town in the cold, literally for many without an adequate alternative fuel source.
But in a storm, all attention turns first to the ability of emergency responders safely making their way around town.
Harvard Fire Chief Rick Sicard is the town's emergency management director. He said he worked in concert to lead the operation with Police Chief Ed Denmark. "He sat next to me the whole time. It was a good joint effort. We covered for one another."
The police, in concert with the Council on Aging, performed welfare checks on seniors who were registered. Instead of elders calling in, Sicard said "during the storm, we reversed that and we called. If they didn't answer, the police did welfare checks.
